I realized later in life that my “soul place” is the desert. There is something in its vastness and austerity that feels deeply familiar and grounding.
In 2025, I was offered a month-long residency at Estudio Corazón at Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico. Immersed in this high desert landscape, my days were shaped by wide skies, shifting light, wind, and silence. The land demanded attention and patience, offering a way of seeing that is both humbling and expansive.
New Mexico is, of course, where Georgia O’Keeffe found enduring inspiration, and Ghost Ranch was central to her vision. While my work follows its own path, being in this place—so charged with history, beauty, and presence—created a quiet dialogue with the artists who came before. The desert did not feel borrowed or romanticized; it felt claimed, elemental, and alive, reaffirming my sense of belonging to this landscape and deepening my commitment to listening to what it asks of the work.

The Royal Botanic Gardens in London are astonishing--a madcap of tropical blooms and the strangest cacti I'd ever seen. I took a gazillion close-ups and decided to turn them into paintings. I transferred the images to prepared panels and began, feeling unsure how to "collaborate" with something so obviously perfect. After many iterations painting in, around, over the flowers and then using mineral spirits to retreat to the understory, I made my way. In some of these Organic Abstractions remnants of the blossoms remain, in some they became the supporting structure for a new visual interpretation.
